First Khutbah
Verily, all praise is for Allah. We praise Him, we seek His assistance and we ask for His forgiveness. And we seek refuge in Him from the evils of our selves. Whoever Allah guides, none can misguide. Whoever He misguides, none can guide. And I bear witness that there is no deity other than Allah and I bear witness that Mohammad is His slave and messenger.
Al Imran 102 : O you who believe! Fear Allah as He should be feared, and die not except in a state of Islam.
Oh People:
The believer is in most need of his Creator in all aspects of his life-in his actions-while in motion and while still-in residence and while travelling. For His Lord is his support, help and aim. The devoted servant is a dutiful worshipper. In submission and humility to Allah the Exalted. The stronger the connection between the servant and his Lord and if he is constantly obedient to Allah, then Allah guides his way, enlightens his judgment, strengthens his resolve, increases his strength upon strength and fortifies his connection to the religion. The Prophet Hud (ﷺ) said to his people guiding them:
Hood 52- And O my people! Ask forgiveness of your Lord and then repent to Him, He will send you from the sky abundant rain, and add strength to your strength, so do not turn away as criminals (disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah)
Ibn Kathir said “ whomsoever has this characteristic -that is repentance -Allah will facilitate his provision, and make his affairs easy and preserve his interests and strength”
When Fatimah asked the Prophet (ﷺ) for a servant he responded to her and her husband Ali “Shall I not guide you to something better than what you requested of me? When you go to bed, recite: Tasbih (Subhan-Allah) thirty-three times, Tahmid (Al-hamdu lillah) thirty-three times and Takbir (Allahu Akbar) thirty-four times. For it is better than a servant”
The Prophet (ﷺ) indicated to his daughter Fatimah that the remembrance of Allah strengthens the bodies and that she would get strength by making this remembrance that he (ﷺ) taught her. And be able to do more things and serve yourself more than the servant could.
Ibn Hajr said “One benefits by his (ﷺ) words “Shall I not guide you to something better than what you requested of me” that the one commits to making remembrance, Allah gives him more strength than one could get from a servant, or his matters would be facilitated to the point that they would be made easier than if they were given to servant.
Oh Muslims: The dutiful servants of Allah realize that remembrance of Allah is their source of strength. And that the need to nourish their souls is stronger than the needs of their bodies. Rather, the substance from which their bodies draw their strength is the elevation of their souls. Their hearts are attached to Allah. Their tongues are constantly in the remembrance of Allah. It was related in Sahih Muslim in the Hadeeth of Jabir bin Samrah that the Prophet (ﷺ) if he (ﷺ) prayed Fajr he would sit in his (ﷺ) place of prayer until the sun rose. Abu Abbas Al Qurtubi said “ This action from the Prophet (ﷺ) indicates that it is recommended to stay in the place of praying Fajr making remembrance and supplications until the sun rises. Because this is a time one cannot pray and one has just completed a witnessed prayer and the business of the day has not yet started. So the remembrance and supplications are made by an unoccupied heart and a present mind making more likely that the remembrances are heard and the supplications are answered” This act of worship nourishes the soul and strengthens the inner self and tames the will. So it is no wonder that the Prophet (ﷺ) was forbearing in what he (ﷺ) encountered of difficulty and hardships in the way of Allah. What he encountered of trials and harm and he was able to repel the plotting of the enemy. Allah the Most High said:
Al Hijr 97-98 – And We already know that your chest is constrained by what they say. So glorify the praises of your Lord and be of those who prostrate themselves to Him.
That is, rely on Allah your Creator. For he will suffice you and give you victory over them. So busy yourself with the remembrance of Allah, praising Him, Glorifying Him and Worshipping Him that is salat. For this reason He said:
Al Hijr 98 – So glorify the praises of your Lord and be of those who prostrate themselves to Him.
The Prophet (ﷺ) would pray if he was faced with a difficult matter. The praying is the biggest assistance to be steadfast in a situation like Allah the Most High said:
Al Ankabot 45 – Recite, [O Muhammad], what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish prayer. Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allah is greater. And Allah knows that which you do.
I say what you have heard and I seek forgiveness from Allah for me and you from every sin. So seek forgives from Him, Verily He is Oft-Forgiving, the Most Merciful.
Second Khutbah
All praise is to Allah, and peace and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, and I bear witness that there is no deity other than Allah and I bear witness that Mohammad is His slave and messenger.
Oh Muslims:
The heart requires nourishment to stay strong. The nourishment of the heart is Iman in Allah the Most High and the righteous deeds. And the extent that a servant attains from these determines the degree of his heart’s strength and resolve on the truth. The true life is the life of the heart. And the life of the heart can only be attained by what pleases Allah the Most High. It is authenticated from the Prophet (ﷺ) that he said:
“The example of the one who makes remembrance of his Lord and the one who does not make remembrance of Him, is like that of the living and the dead.”
The heart is nourished and content in a manner that cannot be imagined whenever it turns to and connects to Allah. On the other hand, when a person turns away from obeying his Lord and is heedless then his heart dies. A person cannot find peace in his heart, calm mind and relaxation in his chest except through the obedience of Allah. So these acts of worship and obedience that a person does are a means, by the permission of Allah, for attaining tranquility, patience and steadfastness. And the worries and anxiety disappear and it prevents depression and it does away with the strains/stress that a person feels when he faces the hardships of this life.
Oh servants of Allah. Each one of us should reflect within themselves. And think about their day and night to see how much time was dedicated to the remembrance of Allah. And let us remember the great hadeeth describing the virtues of remembrance of Allah and that great reward that Allah gives for it.
Abu Ad-Darda narrated that :the Prophet said: “Should I not inform you of the best of your deeds, and the purest of them with your Master, and the highest of them in your ranks, and what is better for you than spending gold and silver, and better for you than meeting your enemy and striking their necks, and they strike your necks?” They said: “Of course.” He said, “The remembrance of Allah [Most High].”
Servants of Allah. Indeed, Allah orders justice and good conduct and giving to relatives and forbids immorality and bad conduct and oppression. He admonishes you that perhaps you will be reminded.
