Congregational Repentance

https://www.khutbah.info/congregational-repentance/ When people persist in disobedience either individually or collectively, they must  repent  at all times and in each situation. If they disobeyed Allah individually they should repent individually. And if they disobeyed Allah collectively, they should repent collectively. For this reason, the congregational repentance was ordained. It is mentioned in the Quran. The previous nations performed it. The companions performed it as well. For if the punishment falls, it strikes broadly and is not specific. The Prophet (ﷺ) said – Allah does not punish collectively based on the actions of a specific group until they witness evil being conducted before them while they are able to disavow it but they choose not to do so. If this happens, then Allah’s wrath strikes specifically and collectively.

Praise be to Allah the Great, the Most Forgiving:

Ghafer 3- The Forgiver of sin, the Acceptor of repentance, the Severe in punishment, the Bestower of favors, none has the right to be worshipped but He, to Him is the final return.

Allah’s forbearance and toleration of His servants is great. His wrath intensifies over the violation of His prohibitions. Nonetheless, He gives reprieve…but when He seizes, He does not let go.

Hud 102- Such is the Seizure of your Lord when He seizes the towns while they are doing wrong. Verily, His Seizure is painful, and severe.

And I bear witness that Mohammad is His messenger. He advised, guided and warned this Ummah. Through hope and Fear. He (ﷺ) informed about the way to be saved on the Day of Judgement. Whomsoever obeys him(ﷺ) , will win and be saved. And whomsoever disobeys him (ﷺ), will lose and be disappointed.

Be conscious/mindful of Allah. Obey Him. Follow His commands and do not disobey Him. And hold on to His religion and do not let go. Hold on to His Book strongly. And be united on it and do not be divided.

AsShura 13- He has ordained for you of religion what He enjoined upon Noah and that which We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], and what We enjoined upon Abraham and Moses and Jesus – to establish the religion and not be divided therein.

When people persist in disobedience either individually or collectively, they must  repent  at all times and in each situation.

Al Anfal 25- And fear a trial which will not strike those who have wronged among you exclusively, and know that Allah is severe in penalty.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said – Allah does not punish collectively based on the actions of a specific group until they witness evil being conducted before them while they are able to disavow it but they choose not to do so. If this happens, then Allah’s wrath strikes specifically and collectively.

The first collective/congregational repentance was that of Adam and Hawa when they ate from the tree and there were no other humans aside from them.

Al Araf 22-23- And their Lord called to them, “Did I not forbid you from that tree and tell you that Satan is to you a clear enemy?” They said, “Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers.”

Allah informed us of the congregational repentance of the people of Yunus when they saw the early stages of the punishment. Allah lifted the punishment from them as a result of their repentance.

Yunus 98- Then has there not been a single city that believed so its faith benefited it except the people of Yunus? When they believed, We removed from them the punishment of disgrace in worldly life and gave them enjoyment for a time.

There was not a previous people that all believed in their Prophet except the people of Yunus. And their belief was due to fear of the punishment that their Prophet warned them about…after they saw its early signs and after their Prophet left them. At that point they turned to Allah and asked for His help and humbled themselves before Him and invoked Him with submission. They brought their children,  they brought their riding animals, they brought their livestock. And they asked Allah the Most High to lift the punishment that their Prophet warned them about. At that point, Allah had mercy on them and lifted the punishment from them.

The Ansar made a congregational repentance. This happened when the spoils of the battle of Hunain were being distributed to the ones whose hearts were inclined to the truth. The Ansar felt uneasy and some of them said: May Allah forgive the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) that he gives the people of Quraish, and ignored us, whereas our swords are still dripping from their blood. Anas b. Malik said: What they said was related to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and he called them to a tent and he did not call anyone aside from them. When they had assembled, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) stood and said: What have you said? The wise people of the Ansar said: Messenger of Allah, our leaders they have said nothing, but we have among us immature persons who said: May Allah forgive the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) that he gave to Quraish and ignored us despite the fact that our swords are dripping with their blood. Upon this the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: I give at times material gifts to persons who were recently in the state of unbelief, so that I may incline them to truth. Don’t you feel delighted that people should go with riches, and you should go back to your homes with the Messenger of Allah? By Allah, what you return with is better than what they return with. They said: Yes, Messenger of Allah, we are pleased. In another narration for Ahmad – Were it not for the Hijrah, I would have been a man from among the Ansar. And if the people took a path and the Ansar took a path, I would take Ansar’s path.” Oh Allah have mercy on the Ansar. And the children of the Ansar. And the grandchildren of the Ansar. He said that and the people wept until their beards became wet and they said: “We are pleased with the way that Messenger of Allah divides the shares.

Second Khutbah

Allah commanded the believers to repent collectively when He said:

An Noor 31- And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.

And this verse that commanded the believers to repent collectively concluded with a verse commanding to lower the gaze, guard the private parts, for the woman to wear Hijab and prohibited them from displaying their adornment. Looking at the prohibited is an affliction that is widespread in these times. Whether it is in the markets or pathways. Or through the satellite channels or through the smart phones. And these are afflictions and evils that make one another easier to do as was related in the hadeeth. So it is necessary that all believing men and women repent to Allah from it. And repent from all the sins and bad deeds. And to enjoin the good such as enjoining repentance. And to prohibit sins. Among the sins is to persist in sinning and not repenting or to delay repenting.

As Shura 25-26- And He it is Who accepts repentance from His servants, and forgives sins, and He knows what you do. And He answers the supplication of those who have believed and done righteous deeds and increases for them from His bounty. But the disbelievers will have a severe punishment.

We ask that Allah favor us with a genuine repentance. And that he pardon and forgive us. Indeed, He is the One Who forgives, the Most Merciful.
