The Sun

https://www.khutbah.info/the-sun/ The sun rises each day and nothing is more beautiful than its rising. It sets, and nothing is more magnificent than its setting. In the cold, it warms with its heat. In the heat, it burns with its rays. Yet it is nothing but a small part of the creation of Allah Almighty: Al-Anbiya (21) 33: And it is He who created the night and the day and the sun and the moon; all [heavenly bodies] in an orbit are swimming.

Verily, all praise is for Allah. We praise Him, we seek His assistance and we ask for His forgiveness. And we seek refuge in Him from the evils of our selves. Whoever Allah guides, none can misguide. Whoever He misguides, none can guide. And I bear witness that there is no deity other than Allah and I bear witness that Mohammad is His slave and messenger.

Al Imran 102 : O you who believe! Fear Allah as He should be feared, and die not except in a state of Islam.

Oh people:

The Sun is among the mighty signs of Allah Almighty. He honored it, by swearing by it in His noble Book:

Ash-Shams (91) 1: By the Sun and its brightness.

The sun rises each day and nothing is more beautiful than its rising. It sets, and nothing is more magnificent than its setting. In the cold, it warms with its heat. In the heat, it burns with its rays. Yet it is nothing but a small part of the creation of Allah Almighty:

Al-Anbiya (21) 33: And it is He who created the night and the day and the sun and the moon; all [heavenly bodies] in an orbit are swimming.

Because of its enormity, its radiant light, and the signs contained within it, some peoples regarded it with such awe that they worshipped it besides Allah Almighty. As the hoopoe said to Solomon – peace be upon him:

An-Naml (27) 23–24: (23) Indeed, I found [there] a woman ruling them, and she has been given of all things, and she has a great throne. (24) I found her and her people prostrating to the sun instead of Allah, and Satan has made their deeds pleasing to them and averted them from [His] way, so they are not guided.

Allah Almighty has declared that the sun is among His signs. Indeed the Creator alone deserves worship:

Fussilat (41) 37: And of His signs are the night and day and the sun and moon. Do not prostrate to the sun or to the moon, but prostrate to Allah, who created them, if it should be Him that you worship.

The movement of the sun, its light, its radiation and warmth, its precise course, and its immense size have amazed humanity. Some even went to the extent of worshipping it in spite of it being a clear proof, and a manifest sign of the greatness of its Creator – Glorified and Exalted.

Abraham – peace be upon him – ended his debate conclusively with the mention of the sun, leaving his opponent speechless :

Al-Baqarah (2) 258: Abraham said, Indeed, Allah brings up the sun from the east, so bring it up from the west.’ So the disbeliever was overwhelmed [by astonishment], and Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.

And many of the unbelievers knew that the sun was created by Allah Almighty but it was their arrogance and obstinacy that prevented them from worshipping Him Almighty:

Al-‘Ankabut (29) 61: And if you asked them, Who created the heavens and the earth and subjected the sun and the moon?’ they would surely say, Allah.’

And despite its vastness and grandeur, the sun has not displayed arrogance towards its Creator, as some humans have. Rather, it glorifies Allah Almighty:

Al-Isra (17) 44: And there is not a thing except that it exalts [Allah] by His praise.

And it prostrates to Him Almighty:

Al-Hajj (22) 18: Do you not see that to Allah prostrates whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth – the sun, the moon, the stars, the mountains, the trees, the moving creatures, and many of the people?

One of its wonders is that it scarcely sets upon one part of the earth but that it rises upon another. At every moment it has an east and a west. That is why Allah Almighty informed that it has multiple easts and wests:

Al-Ma‘arij (70) 40–41: (40) So I swear by the Lord of [all] risings and settings that indeed We are able (41) to replace them with better than them; and We are not to be outdone.

And despite its grandeur and enormous size, Allah Almighty subjected it to the service of inherently weak humans, whom Allah has honored:

An-Nahl (16) 12: And He has subjected for you the night and day and the sun and moon, and the stars are subjected by His command.

And Allah Almighty has placed within it countless benefits. Time itself is regulated by its motion. Its setting is night and its rising is day. The times of prayer are known by shadows, which are mere effects of the Sun’s light.

Al-Furqan (25) 45 : Have you not considered your Lord – how He extends the shadow, and if He willed, He could have made it stationary? Then We made the sun for it an indication.

The sun illuminates the day, dispels the darkness, awakens the living– humans, birds, insects and animals alike – so they go forth in search of their provision. Its light and radiance fills the earth with activity. When it sets, darkness descends, sleep and rest prevail, and creatures retreat to rest, preparing for a new day.

Consider if it were to never set and never disappear, how would those on earth rest? How would they sleep? And if it were to never rise, how would they earn their sustenance?

Al-Qasas (28) 72–73: (72) Say, Have you considered: if Allah should make for you the night continuous until the Day of Resurrection, what deity other than Allah could bring you light? Then will you not hear?’ Say, Have you considered: if Allah should make for you the day continuous until the Day of Resurrection, what deity other than Allah could bring you a night in which you may rest? Then will you not see?   (73)  And out of His mercy He made for you the night and the day that you may rest therein and [by day] seek from His bounty, and that perhaps you will be grateful.

Were it not that Allah Almighty created the Sun and subjected it for the service of the earth, then life upon it would not have been organized in such a wondrous way. Because of the Sun, water rises as vapor and winds are stirred; clouds gather, rain descends, and the earth is revived with fertility so that life may flourish. Beneath its light, grains swell and fruits ripen; plants draw strength from its radiance, storing in their tissues the Sun’s energy. That energy flows from plant to animal, and from animal to humans, sustaining every living being in a perfect chain of life. And its rays, with light and warmth, check the spread of countless microbes upon the earth—without which life itself could not endure.

The scorching heat of the Sun is a reminder of people’s inherent weakness and helplessness, lest they grow arrogant and turn away from the worship of Allah and submission to His command.

Allah Almighty set its distance from the earth in perfect proportion to sustain life and enable it to flourish. If it were closer, it would burn the earth and all upon it. And if it were farther, the earth and all upon it would freeze.

The sun never departs from its orbit nor deviates from its course. Allah Almighty said:

Ya-Sin (36) 38–40: (38) And the sun runs [on course] toward its stopping point. That is the determination of the Exalted in Might, the Knowing. (39) And the moon – We have determined for it phases, until it returns appearing like the old date stalk. (40) It is not allowable for the sun to reach the moon, nor does the night overtake the day, but each, in an orbit, is swimming.

Indeed, Allah, created everything in perfect measure:

Yunus (10)  5: It is He who made the sun a shining light and the moon a derived light and determined for it phases – that you may know the number of years and account [of time]. Allah has not created this except in truth. He details the signs for a people who know.

I say what you have heard and I seek forgiveness from Allah for me and you from every sin. So seek forgives from Him, Verily He is Oft-Forgiving, the Most Merciful.

Second Khutbah

All praise is to Allah, and peace and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, and I bear witness that there is no deity other than Allah and I bear witness that Mohammad is His slave and messenger.

Oh Muslims:

The sun and the phenomena associated with it have a profound connection with the Day of Resurrection. The sun rising from the west will be a sign that the door of repentance has been closed, and an indication that the Hour has begun. The Prophet ﷺ said:

Migration will not cease until repentance ceases, and repentance will not cease until the sun rises from the west. [Abu Dawud 2479, Grade: Sahih (Albani) ]

And in the vast plains of the Resurrection, the sun will play a tremendous role.  On that Day: it will draw near to the heads of all creatures who long for the judgment to be hastened. The Prophet ﷺ said:

The sun will draw so close to creation on the Day of Resurrection that it will be only the distance of a mile from them. Then people will be immersed in sweat according to their deeds: for some it will reach their ankles, for some their knees, for some their waists, and for some it will engulf them completely until it bridles them. And the Messenger of Allah  pointed with his hand to his mouth. [Muslim 2864]

Indeed, the blazing of the sun is a reminder of its blazing on the plains of Resurrection. There will be no fleeing from its heat and there will be no devices to cool nor water to extinguish its flame.

Nothing will save from the heat of that Day, except faith and righteous deeds, and adherence to the means granting the shade of the Most Merciful on the Day when there is no shade but His shade. So fear Allah, obey Him, and beware of what leads to Hellfire and to a severe reckoning. For the truly successful are those saved in the Hereafter.

I conclude with this and send prayers of blessings and peace upon your Prophet as your Lord commanded:

Al Ahzaab (33) 56: Indeed, Allah confers blessing upon the Prophet, and His angels [ask Him to do so]. O you who have believed, ask [ Allah to confer] blessing upon him and ask [ Allah to grant him] peace.

O Allah, guide us with those whom You have guided, grant us well-being among those You have granted well-being, be an ally to us along with those whom You are an ally to, and bless what You have bestowed upon us, and save us from the evil of what You have decreed.  For verily You decree and none can decree over You. He whom You support can never be humiliated. Glory is to You, our Lord, You are Blessed and Exalted.

O Allah, We ask You for all that is good, in this world and in the Hereafter, what we know and what we do not know. O Allah, we seek refuge with You from all evil, in this world and in the Hereafter, what we know and what we do not know. O Allah, we ask You for the good that Your servant and Prophet has asked You for, and we seek refuge with You from the evil from which Your servant and Prophet sought refuge. O Allah, we ask You for Paradise and for that which brings one closer to it, in word and deed, and we seek refuge in You from Hell and from that which brings one closer to it, in word and deed. And we ask You to make every decree that You decree concerning us good

Servants of Allah. Indeed, Allah orders justice and good conduct and giving to relatives and forbids immorality and bad conduct and oppression. He admonishes you that perhaps you will be reminded.

Remember Allah, the Great – He will remember you. Thank Him for His favors – He will increase you therein.  And seek forgiveness from Him – He will forgive you. And be conscious of Him – He will provide you a way out of difficult matters. And, establish the prayer.
