إِنَّ الْحَمْدَ لِلَّهِ ,نَحْمَدُهُ ,وَنَسْتَعِينُهُ وَنَسْتَغْفِرُهُ , وَنَعُوذُ بِاللهِ مِنْ شُرُورِ أَنْفُسِنَا وَمِنْ سَيِّئَاتِ أَعْمَالِنَا ,مَنْ يَهْدِهِ اللهُ فَلَا مُضِلَّ لَهُ , وَمَنْ يُضْلِلْ فَلَا هَادِيَ لَهُ , وَأَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ
Verily, all praise is for Allah. We praise Him, we seek His assistance and we ask for His forgiveness. And we seek refuge in Him from the evils of our selves. Whoever Allah guides, none can misguide. Whoever He misguides, none can guide. And I bear witness that there is no deity other than Allah and I bear witness that Mohammad is His slave and messenger.
يَا أَيُّهَا الّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ حَقَّ تُقَاتِهِ وَلَا تَمُوتُنَّ إِلَّا وَأَنْتُمْ مُسْلِمُونَ – آل عمران:102
Al Imran 102 : O you who believe! Fear Allah as He should be feared, and die not except in a state of Islam.
Oh people:

وَتَصْرِيفِ الرِّيَاحِ آَيَاتٌ لِقَوْمٍ يَعْقِلُونَ
Al-Jathiyah (45) 5: And [in] the directing of the winds are signs for a people who reason.
By the command of its Creator and Disposer – Glorified is He – wind may come as mercy or may come as punishment.
The wind is a sign when it comes as mercy from Allah, by which He shows compassion:
وَمِنْ آيَاتِهِ أَنْ يُرْسِلَ الرِّيَاحَ مُبَشِّرَاتٍ وَلِيُذِيقَكُمْ مِنْ رَحْمَتِهِ
Ar-Rum (30) 46: And of His signs is [that] He sends the winds as bringers of good tidings and to let you taste His mercy.
And wind is likewise a tremendous sign of Allah when it comes as punishment. Allah listed a number of His signs proving His Power, and mentioned among them the sign of destroying the people of ‘Ād with the wind:
وَفِي عَادٍ إِذْ أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمُ الرِّيحَ العَقِيمَ مَا تَذَرُ مِنْ شَيْءٍ أَتَتْ عَلَيْهِ إِلَّا جَعَلَتْهُ كَالرَّمِيمِ
Adh-Dhariyat (51) 42: And in ‘Aad [was a sign], when We sent against them the barren wind. It left nothing of what it came upon but that it made it like disintegrated ruins.
Winds have immense benefits — without them, the earth and all upon it would perish. Winds are the means of the blessed rain, by the command of Allah, and the bearer of glad tidings before it:
وَهُوَ الَّذِي أَرْسَلَ الرِّيَاحَ بُشْرًا بَيْنَ يَدَيْ رَحْمَتِهِ وَأَنْزَلْنَا مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مَاءً طَهُورًا
Al-Furqan (25) 48 : And it is He who sends the winds as good tidings before His mercy, and We send down from the sky pure water.
People rejoice because of the mercy and blessed rain that follow wind — by which their lives are sustained, as well as the lives of their livestock, their trees, their crops and the abundance of their livelihood.
Winds drive the clouds in the sky, clouds like mountains, to wherever Allah wills, and by them He provides water to whomever He pleases:
وَهُوَ الَّذِي يُرْسِلُ الرِّيَاحَ بُشْرًا بَيْنَ يَدَيْ رَحْمَتِهِ حَتَّى إِذَا أَقَلَّتْ سَحَابًا ثِقَالًا سُقْنَاهُ لِبَلَدٍ مَيِّتٍ فَأَنْزَلْنَا بِهِ المَاءَ
Al-A’raf (7) 57: And it is He who sends the winds as good tidings before His mercy until, when they have carried heavy rainclouds, We drive them to a dead land and We send down rain therein.
Winds pollinate the clouds by Allah’s command so that rain descends, and pollinate the crops and trees so that they thrive, fruitful and green. Winds carry seeds from land to land so that, when watered, those lands become green meadows. No matter what mankind does with all their might, they are incapable of turning vast deserts that stretch as far as the eye can see into a green carpet teeming with plants at every corner of the earth — but the winds do so by the command of Allah and His power:
وَأَرْسَلْنَا الرِّيَاحَ لَوَاقِحَ فَأَنْزَلْنَا مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مَاءً فَأَسْقَيْنَاكُمُوهُ وَمَا أَنْتُمْ لَهُ بِخَازِنِينَ
Al-Hijr (15) 22: And We have sent the fertilizing winds and sent down water from the sky and given it to you to drink, and you are not its retainers.
Winds are, by Allah’s permission, a cause for the water cycle on earth; were it not for that, water would become stagnant and useless for sustaining life. Indeed, every living creature on earth would perish if there was no wind.
Winds are devoted servants of Allah. By His command they move the ships upon the seas:
إِنْ يَشَأْ يُسْكِنِ الرِّيحَ فَيَظْلَلْنَ رَوَاكِدَ عَلَى ظَهْرِهِ
Ash-Shura (42) 33: If He willed, He could still the wind, and they would remain motionless on its surface.
Then, in a moment, He may command the wind to stir again — and what was a gentle, pleasant breeze becomes a raging storm that nearly drowns them, leaving them with no refuge except Allah:
هُوَ الَّذِي يُسَيِّرُكُمْ فِي البَرِّ وَالبَحْرِ حَتَّى إِذَا كُنْتُمْ فِي الفُلْكِ وَجَرَيْنَ بِهِمْ بِرِيحٍ طَيِّبَةٍ وَفَرِحُوا بِهَا جَاءَتْهَا رِيحٌ عَاصِفٌ وَجَاءَهُمُ المَوْجُ مِنْ كُلِّ مَكَانٍ وَظَنُّوا أَنَّهُمْ أُحِيطَ بِهِمْ دَعَوُا اللهَ مُخْلِصِينَ لَهُ الدِّينَ لَئِنْ أَنْجَيْتَنَا مِنْ هَذِهِ لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الشَّاكِرِينَ
Yunus (10) 22: It is He who enables you to travel on land and sea until, when you are in ships and they sail with them by a good wind and they rejoice therein, there comes a storm wind and the waves come upon them from everywhere and they assume they are surrounded, supplicating Allah, sincere to Him in religion, ‘If You should save us from this, we will surely be among the thankful.’
Thus Allah warned people not to disbelieve in Him, nor to feel secure from His plan, frightening them with a wind that could drown them:
أَمْ أَمِنْتُمْ أَنْ يُعِيدَكُمْ فِيهِ تَارَةً أُخْرَى فَيُرْسِلَ عَلَيْكُمْ قَاصِفًا مِنَ الرِّيحِ فَيُغْرِقَكُمْ بِمَا كَفَرْتُمْ
Al-Isra (17) 69: Or do you feel secure that He will not return you to it another time and send upon you a hurricane of wind and drown you for what you denied?
And because wind is one of Allah’s troops, He subjugated it for some of His messengers — as He subjugated it for Sulayman, peace be upon him:
وَلِسُلَيْمَانَ الرِّيحَ عَاصِفَةً تَجْرِي بِأَمْرِهِ إِلَى الأَرْضِ الَّتِي بَارَكْنَا فِيهَا
Al-Anbiya (21) 81: And to Solomon [We subjected] the wind blowing forcefully, proceeding by his command toward the land which We had blessed.
Allah gave victory through the wind to Hud, peace be upon him, and destroyed the people of ‘Ād with it when they denied him:
فَأَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ رِيحًا صَرْصَرًا فِي أَيَّامٍ نَحِسَاتٍ لِنُذِيقَهُمْ عَذَابَ الخِزْيِ فِي الحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا
Fussilat (41) 16: So We sent upon them a screaming wind during days of misfortune to make them taste the punishment of disgrace in worldly life.
And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was granted victory by means of the wind in one of the most difficult situations ever to face the Muslims — when the confederate of idolaters besieged Madinah in the Battle of the Trench. The wind dispersed their forces, shattered their coalition, and tore apart their confederacy:
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آَمَنُوا اذْكُرُوا نِعْمَةَ اللهِ عَلَيْكُمْ إِذْ جَاءَتْكُمْ جُنُودٌ فَأَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ رِيحًا وَجُنُودًا لَمْ تَرَوْهَا وَكَانَ اللهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ بَصِيرًا
Al-Ahzab (33) 9: O you who have believed, remember the favor of Allah upon you when armies came to [attack] you and We sent upon them a wind and armies you did not see. And ever is Allah, of what you do, Seeing.
Truly, the wind is one of the marvels of creation: humanity depends upon it, yet they fear it. Were they to harness every resource and invent every invention, they could never stir it when it is still. And once it moves, they have no strength to stop it, lessen it, or divert its course. The most they can do is flee from it and take refuge in shelters from its force — to the point that entire towns and villages are evacuated before its path. And then they wait, they wait the waiting of the helpless and desperate, whose means have been exhausted and are overcome by despair.Then, when it subsides, they bury the deceased, treat the wounded, shelter the displaced, and repair what has been destroyed.
أَقُولُ مَا تَسْمَعُونَ وَأَسْتَغْفِرُ اللهَ لِي وَلَكُمْ مِنْ كُلِّ ذَنْبٍ فَاسْتَغْفِرُوهُ إِنَّهُ هُوَ الغَفُورُ الرَّحِيمُ
I say what you have heard and I seek forgiveness from Allah for me and you from every sin. So seek forgives from Him, Verily He is Oft-Forgiving, the Most Merciful.
Second Khutbah
الحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ, وَالصَّلَاةُ وَالسَّلَامُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ , وَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَاْ إِلَهَ إِلَّاْ اَللهُ وَحْدَهُ لَاْشَرِيْكَ لَهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدَاً عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُوْلُهُ
All praise is to Allah, and peace and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, and I bear witness that there is no deity other than Allah and I bear witness that Mohammad is His slave and messenger.
Oh Muslims:
The wind is among the creations of Allah Most High that, by His command, may come as mercy, and by His command may come as punishment.
What is prescribed for a Muslim when the wind blows is to fear punishment; for people have been punished by it in times past and present. ‘Aishah—may Allah be pleased with her—narrated:
كان رسولُ اللهِ صلَّى اللهُ عليه وسلَّمَ إذا عصَفتِ الرِّيحُ قال اللَّهُمَّ إنِّي أسأَلُكَ خيرَها، وخيرَ ما فيها وخيرَ ما أُرسِلَتْ به وأَعوذُ بكَ من شرِّها وشرِّ ما فيها وشرِّ ما أُرسِلَتْ به وإذا تخيَّلتِ السَّماءُ تغيَّر لونُهُ ودخَل وخرَج وأقبَل، وأدبَر، فإذا مطَرتْ سُرِّيَ عنه، فسأَلتْهُ عائشةُ، فقال: لعلَّهُ كما قال قومُ عادٍ: {فَلَمَّا رَأَوْهُ عَارِضًا مُسْتَقْبِلَ أَوْدِيَتِهِمْ قَالُوا هَذَا عَارِضٌ مُمْطِرُنَا} [الأحقاف: 24]
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, whenever the wind blew strongly, would say: O Allah, I ask You for its goodness, the goodness within it, and the goodness with which it was sent; and I seek refuge in You from its evil, the evil within it, and the evil with which it was sent. And when the sky became overcast, his color would change, and he would go in and out, coming and going anxiously. But when it rained, he would be relieved. Aishah asked him about this, and he said: Perhaps it is as the people of ʿĀd said: Aḥqāf (46) 24: And when they saw it as a cloud approaching their valleys, they said, ‘This is a cloud bringing us rain.’ [Muslim 899]
And since the wind is by the command of Allah Most High, and some people may be harmed by it—through the ruin of their crops and fruits, the death of their livestock and the loss of their wealth, or the destruction of their towns and buildings—it is not permissible for anyone to revile it; reviling it is a reviling of Allah Most High, for He is its Creator, Commander, and Disposer—majestic is He in His exaltedness. Rather, a Muslim, when it blows, should reflect upon the power of Allah manifest in it, and adhere to what has come in the Sunnah. Ubayy ibn Ka‘b—may Allah be pleased with him—narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
لا تسُبُّوا الرِّيحَ فإذا رأَيتُم ما تكرَهونَ فقولوا اللَّهمَّ إنَّا نسألُك مِن خيرِ هذه الرِّيحِ وخيرِ ما فيها وخيرِ ما أُمِرَت به ونعوذُ بك مِن شرِّ هذه الرِّيحِ وشرِّ ما فيها وشرِّ ما أُمِرَت به
Do not curse the wind. If you see what you dislike, then say: O Allah, we ask You for the good of this wind, the good that is within it, and the good of what it has been commanded to bring; and we seek refuge in You from the evil of this wind, the evil that is within it, and the evil of what it has been commanded to bring.’ [al-Tirmidhi 2252, Grade: Sahih (Albani)]
And Ibn ‘Abbas—may Allah be pleased with them both—narrated:
إن رجلاً نازعتْه الريحُ رداءَه على عهدِ النبيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم فلعنَها فقال النبيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم لا تلعنْها فإنها مأمورةٌ وإنه من لعنَ شيئًا ليس له بأهلٍ رجعتِ اللعنةُ عليه
In the time of the Prophet ﷺ , the wind snatched at the cloak of a man, so he cursed it. The Prophet ﷺ said: ‘Do not curse it, for it is under command. And indeed, whoever curses something that does not deserve to be cursed, the curse returns upon him.’ [Abu Dawud 4098, Grade: Sahih (Albani)]
هَذَا وَصَلُّوا وَسَلِّمُوا عَلَى نَبِيِّكُم كَمَا أَمَرَكُمْ بِذلِكَ رَبُّكُمْ , فَقَالَ
I conclude with this and send prayers of blessings and peace upon your Prophet as your Lord commanded:
إِنَّ اللَّهَ وَمَلَائِكَتَهُ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ۚ يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا صَلُّوا عَلَيْهِ وَسَلِّمُوا تَسْلِيمًا
Al Ahzaab (33) 56: Indeed, Allah confers blessing upon the Prophet, and His angels [ask Him to do so]. O you who have believed, ask [ Allah to confer] blessing upon him and ask [ Allah to grant him] peace.
اللَّهُمَّ اهْدِنا فِيمَنْ هَدَيْتَ وَعَافِنا فِيمَنْ عَافَيْتَ وَتَوَلَّنا فِيمَنْ تَوَلَّيْتَ وَبَارِكْ لنا فِيمَا أَعْطَيْتَ وَقِنا شَرَّ مَا قَضَيْتَ إِنَّكَ تَقْضِي وَلاَ يُقْضَى عَلَيْكَ وَإِنَّهُ لاَ يَذِلُّ مَنْ وَالَيْتَ تَبَارَكْتَ رَبَّنَا وَتَعَالَيْتَ
O Allah, guide us with those whom You have guided, grant us well-being among those You have granted well-being, be an ally to us along with those whom You are an ally to, and bless what You have bestowed upon us, and save us from the evil of what You have decreed. For verily You decree and none can decree over You. He whom You support can never be humiliated. Glory is to You, our Lord, You are Blessed and Exalted.
اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّا نَسْأَلُكَ مِنَ الْخَيْرِ كُلِّهِ عَاجِلِهِ وَآجِلِهِ مَا عَلِمْنا مِنْهُ وَمَا لَمْ نَعْلَمْ وَنَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الشَّرِّ كُلِّهِ عَاجِلِهِ وَآجِلِهِ مَا عَلِمْنا مِنْهُ وَمَا لَمْ نَعْلَمْ اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّا نَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ خَيْرِ مَا سَأَلَكَ عَبْدُكَ وَنَبِيُّكَ وَنَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا عَاذَ بِهِ عَبْدُكَ وَنَبِيُّكَ اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّا نَسْأَلُكَ الْجَنَّةَ وَمَا قَرَّبَ إِلَيْهَا مِنْ قَوْلٍ أَوْ عَمَلٍ وَنَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ النَّارِ وَمَا قَرَّبَ إِلَيْهَا مِنْ قَوْلٍ أَوْ عَمَلٍ وَنَسْأَلُكَ أَنْ تَجْعَلَ كُلَّ قَضَاءٍ قَضَيْتَهُ لَنا خَيْرًا
O Allah, We ask You for all that is good, in this world and in the Hereafter, what we know and what we do not know. O Allah, we seek refuge with You from all evil, in this world and in the Hereafter, what we know and what we do not know. O Allah, we ask You for the good that Your servant and Prophet has asked You for, and we seek refuge with You from the evil from which Your servant and Prophet sought refuge. O Allah, we ask You for Paradise and for that which brings one closer to it, in word and deed, and we seek refuge in You from Hell and from that which brings one closer to it, in word and deed. And we ask You to make every decree that You decree concerning us good
عِبَادَ اللّهِ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَأْمُرُ بِالْعَدْلِ وَالْإِحْسَانِ وَإِيتَاءِ ذِي الْقُرْبَىٰ وَيَنْهَىٰ عَنِ الْفَحْشَاءِ وَالْمُنكَرِ وَالْبَغْيِ يَعِظُكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَذَكَّرُونَ
Servants of Allah. Indeed, Allah orders justice and good conduct and giving to relatives and forbids immorality and bad conduct and oppression. He admonishes you that perhaps you will be reminded.
اُذْكُرُوا اللَّهَ الْعَظِيمَ يَذْكُرْكُمْ واشْكُرُوهُ يَزِدْكُمْ واسْتَغْفِرُوهُ يَغْفِرْ لكُمْ واتّقُوهُ يَجْعَلْ لَكُمْ مِنْ أَمْرِكُمْ مَخْرَجًا وَأَقِمِ الصّلَاة
Remember Allah, the Great – He will remember you. Thank Him for His favors – He will increase you therein. And seek forgiveness from Him – He will forgive you. And be conscious of Him – He will provide you a way out of difficult matters. And, establish the prayer.
