The Last Day

https://www.khutbah.info/the-last-day/ The phrase “the Last Day” appears frequently in the Qur’an, for it is the fifth pillar among the six foundations of faith. “And to believe in the Last Day”, as mentioned in the authentic narration of Imam Muslim from ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, known among the scholars as the Ḥadīth of Jibrīl, peace be upon him. Whoever wishes to behold the Hereafter as though he were seeing it with their very eyes should recite the surahs : At-Takwīr (81), Al-Infiṭār (82), Az-Zalzalah (99), Al-Qāriʿah (101), and Al-Inshiqāq (84).

Verily, all praise is for Allah. We praise Him, we seek His assistance and we ask for His forgiveness. And we seek refuge in Him from the evils of our selves. Whoever Allah guides, none can misguide. Whoever He misguides, none can guide. And I bear witness that there is no deity other than Allah and I bear witness that Mohammad is His slave and messenger.

Al Imran 102 : O you who believe! Fear Allah as He should be feared, and die not except in a state of Islam.

Oh people:

The phrase “the Last Day” appears frequently in the Qur’an, for it is the fifth pillar among the six foundations of faith.

At that solemn hour of departure – one transitions from the world of this life to the world of the Hereafter, from the realm of the temporary to the realm of eternity. At that hour, all measures and priorities are overturned within a person. What they once deemed important and great, whether wealth, children, or status, will, at that decisive moment, hold no value at all. And what they once regarded as insignificant will then become most important and urgently needed. Indeed, good deeds that enrich the soul.

Reflect upon the saying of Allah Almighty:

Al-Munāfiqūn, 63:10: And spend [in the way of Allah] from what We have provided you before death approaches one of you and he says, My Lord, if only You would delay me for a brief term so I would give charity and be among the righteous.’

One asks for respite, not to gain more wealth or worldly advantage, but only so that they may give in charity and perform righteous deeds. Al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Kathīr, may Allah have mercy on him, said in his commentary: “Every negligent one regrets it at the time of death and asks for an extension, even if only for a short while, so that he may seek pardon and make up what he neglected. But alas! What has been, has been, and what is coming will come, and each person is recompensed to the extent of his negligence.”

Reflect also Allah Almighty’s words:

An-Naḥl, 16:97: Whoever does righteousness, whether male or female, while he is a believer—We will surely cause him to live a good life, and We will surely give them their reward [in the Hereafter] according to the best of what they used to do.

Reflect again on His words:

Al-Muʾminūn, 23:99–103: Until, when death comes to one of them, he says, My Lord, send me back that I might do righteousness in that which I left behind.’ No! It is only a word he is saying; and behind them is a barrier until the Day they are resurrected. So when the Horn is blown, no relationship will there be among them that Day, nor will they ask about one another. Then those whose scales are heavy [with good deeds]—it is they who will be the successful. But those whose scales are light—those are the ones who have lost their souls; [being] in Hell, abiding eternally.

You must, therefore, call to mind that awe-filled Hour and prepare for it with righteous and beneficial deeds. For that is the true treasure of your life, the companion at your death, and the provision of your afterlife. Whoever performs good deeds sincerely for the sake of Allah and follows the path of the Prophet ﷺ will never regret.

Reflect, may Allah preserve you, on Allah Almighty’s words:

Al-Aʿlā, 87:16–17: (16) But you prefer the worldly life (17) while the Hereafter is better and more enduring.

Imam al-Qurṭubī, may Allah have mercy on him, mentioned in his tafsir : “Mālik ibn Dīnār, may Allah have mercy on him, said: ‘If this worldly life were made of gold that perishes, and the Hereafter of clay that endures, it would still be fitting that one should prefer the enduring clay over the perishing gold. But how is it, then, when the Hereafter is of everlasting gold and the world is of fleeting clay?’”

Consider, too, the true scale of worth, as Allah says:

Al-Wāqiʿah, 56:1–3: (1) When the Occurrence occurs (2) there is, at its occurrence, no denial. (3) It will bring down [some] and raise up [others].

Al-Baghawī, may Allah have mercy on him, said in his commentary: that Ibn ʿAbbās said: It will lower some people who were elevated in the worldly life, and it will raise others who were humble and weak in the worldly life.”

For those who have retired.  They have retired from the work of this world, but have not retired from the work of the Hereafter.

Remember, may Allah guide you aright, the instruction of your Lord:

Ash-Sharḥ, 94:7–8: (7) So when you have finished [your duties], then stand up [for worship]. (8) And to your Lord direct [your] longing.

Know that this worldly life is short. Allah Almighty says:

Ash-Shuʿarāʾ, 26:205–206: (205) Then have you considered: if We give them enjoyment for years (206)  and then there comes to them that which they were promised?”

So taste the sweetness of worshipping Allah, of reciting His Book and reflecting upon it. Let the Quran be the light of your heart and the dispeller of your sorrow, for it is the soul of life and the life of the soul. Allah says:

Ash-Shūrā, 42:52: And thus We have revealed to you an inspiration of Our command. You did not know what is the Book or [what is] faith, but We have made it a light by which We guide whom We will of Our servants. And indeed, you guide to a straight path.

I say what you have heard and I seek forgiveness from Allah for me and you from every sin. So seek forgives from Him, Verily He is Oft-Forgiving, the Most Merciful.

Second Khutbah

All praise is to Allah, and peace and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, and I bear witness that there is no deity other than Allah and I bear witness that Mohammad is His slave and messenger.

Oh Muslims:

If you wish to succeed in your worldly endeavors, plan them well, strive earnestly in carrying them out, and maintain constant follow-up to correct what is deficient. And know that your family is a fertile field through which you may draw nearer to Allah. Your parents- by honoring them, your wife—by treating her kindly,  your sons and daughters—by raising them righteously and your relatives—by doing good and upholding the ties of kinship.

An-Naḥl, 16:90: Indeed, Allah orders justice and good conduct and giving to relatives.

So plan well, strive in implementation, and remain consistent in oversight to avoid shortcomings. Not only in your worldly endeavors, but in your endeavors for the Hereafter. Choose righteous companions, for when you forget, they will remind you. When you grow lazy, they will energize you. When you are ignorant, they will teach you.

And persist in calling upon Allah and supplicating to Him, for it is reported in the Hadith narrated by ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib, may Allah be pleased with him, that he said:

The Messenger of Allah  said to me: Say: O Allah, guide me and make me steadfast.’ [Muslim 2725a]

And in another Hadith narrated by Anas ibn Mālik, may Allah be pleased with him:

The supplication most often made by the Prophet  was: O Allah, our Lord, grant us good in this world, and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.’ [al-Bukhārī 6389 and Muslim 2690b]

This Hadith  consists of asking of Allah for the good of both worlds, and it is one of the most comprehensive forms of supplication.

Reflect also on what Allah says:

Al-Baqarah, 2:200–201: (200) And of the people is he who says, Our Lord, give us in this world,’ and he will have in the Hereafter no share. (201) But among them is he who says, Our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.’”

Al-Qurṭubī said in his commentary: “This verse is among the comprehensive supplications that encompass both worldly and eternal well-being. It was said that someone asked Anas to supplicate for them, and he replied, ‘O Allah, grant us good in this world and good in the Hereafter and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.’ They said, ‘Add more,’ and he said, ‘What would you want me to add? I have already asked for both this world and the Hereafter.’”

Ibn Saʿdī, may Allah have mercy on him, said in his tafseer : “This is therefore the most complete and comprehensive of all supplications, most deserving of being preferred and repeated. Hence the Prophet ﷺ often invoked it and encouraged others to do the same.”

I conclude with this and send prayers of blessings and peace upon your Prophet as your Lord commanded:

Al Ahzaab (33) 56: Indeed, Allah confers blessing upon the Prophet, and His angels [ask Him to do so]. O you who have believed, ask [ Allah to confer] blessing upon him and ask [ Allah to grant him] peace.

O Allah, guide us with those whom You have guided, grant us well-being among those You have granted well-being, be an ally to us along with those whom You are an ally to, and bless what You have bestowed upon us, and save us from the evil of what You have decreed.  For verily You decree and none can decree over You. He whom You support can never be humiliated. Glory is to You, our Lord, You are Blessed and Exalted.

O Allah, We ask You for all that is good, in this world and in the Hereafter, what we know and what we do not know. O Allah, we seek refuge with You from all evil, in this world and in the Hereafter, what we know and what we do not know. O Allah, we ask You for the good that Your servant and Prophet has asked You for, and we seek refuge with You from the evil from which Your servant and Prophet sought refuge. O Allah, we ask You for Paradise and for that which brings one closer to it, in word and deed, and we seek refuge in You from Hell and from that which brings one closer to it, in word and deed. And we ask You to make every decree that You decree concerning us good

Servants of Allah. Indeed, Allah orders justice and good conduct and giving to relatives and forbids immorality and bad conduct and oppression. He admonishes you that perhaps you will be reminded.

Remember Allah, the Great – He will remember you. Thank Him for His favors – He will increase you therein.  And seek forgiveness from Him – He will forgive you. And be conscious of Him – He will provide you a way out of difficult matters. And, establish the prayer.
