https://www.khutbah.info/the-clear-loss/ There is no loss more ruinous than the loss of one who forgets their Lord, Mighty and Majestic, and is preoccupied with their worldly life at the expense of their Hereafter, failing to reflect upon their fate after death. It is a loss that no other loss, no matter how great, can compare to, for it brings everlasting misery and unending torment, and there will be no second chance to make amends. Surah Az-Zumar (39) 15: Say, ‘Indeed, the losers are the ones who will lose themselves and their families on the Day of Resurrection. Unquestionably, that is the clear loss.’
Verily, all praise is for Allah. We praise Him, we seek His assistance and we ask for His forgiveness. And we seek refuge in Him from the evils of our selves. Whoever Allah guides, none can misguide. Whoever He misguides, none can guide. And I bear witness that there is no deity other than Allah and I bear witness that Mohammad is His slave and messenger.
Al Imran 102 : O you who believe! Fear Allah as He should be feared, and die not except in a state of Islam.
Oh people:
There is no loss more ruinous than the loss of one who forgets their Lord, Mighty and Majestic, and is preoccupied with their worldly life at the expense of their Hereafter, failing to reflect upon their fate after death.
And Allah the Exalted has forbidden the believers from resembling those who forgot Him, glorified is He:
Surah Al-Hashr (59) 19: And be not like those who forgot Allah, so He made them forget themselves. Those are the defiantly disobedient.
For forgetting Allah the Exalted is among the traits of the disbelievers and the hypocrites, as Allah the Exalted says regarding them:
Surah At-Tawbah (9) 67: They forgot Allah, so He forgot them. Indeed, the hypocrites are the defiantly disobedient.
And the intended meaning of forgetting here is not mere unintended lapse or distraction, for that is part of human nature, and Allah the Exalted does take people to account for it. As Allah the Exalted stated regarding the supplication of the believers:
Surah Al-Baqarah (2) 286: Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we forget or make a mistake.
And the Prophet ﷺ said:
Whoever forgets a prayer, let him pray it when he remembers; there is no expiation for it other than that. [Al-Bukhari 597 and Muslim 684a]
And he ﷺ said:
Whoever forgets while fasting and eats or drinks, let him complete his fast, for it is Allah who has fed him and given him drink. [ Al-Bukhari 6669 and Muslim 1155]
Rather, the meaning of forgetting is turning away, neglect, and indifference—a deliberate disregard for the religion of Allah the Exalted. This neglect appears in many forms, including living solely for this worldly life, failing to reflect upon death and what follows it, denying resurrection and recompense or doubting them. This is the way of those who live only for this worldly life and do not believe in the unseen:
Surah Sad (38) 26: Indeed, those who go astray from the way of Allah will have a severe punishment because they forgot the Day of Account.
And included in forgetting Allah the Exalted is abandoning some of the rulings of the Sharia because they do not align with one’s desires, as Allah the Exalted said concerning a previous community:
Surah Al-Ma’idah (5) 13: They distort words from their [proper] places and have forgotten a portion of that of which they were reminded.
Among what they forgot, meaning, neglected and abandoned, was what their Scriptures commanded them regarding belief in the Prophet ﷺ. Thus, abandoning any part of the religion of Allah the Exalted falls under forgetfulness of one’s Lord, glorified is He.
And everyone who refrains from any aspect of the religion of Allah the Exalted, or denies it, or turns away from it without giving it any consideration, has indeed forgotten Allah the Exalted. Among the people of deviations, their forgetfulness of Allah is proportionate to the extent of their deviations; for had they been conscious of their Lord, glorified is He, they would not have introduced into His religion what He did not permit.
As for the sinners, their forgetfulness of Allah corresponds to the extent of their sins. For had they remembered their Lord, glorified is He, they would not have disobeyed Him.
As for those who neglect the obligations and fall short in fulfilling them, their forgetfulness of Allah is according to the degree of their negligence. For acts of obedience are remembrance of Allah the Exalted, and whoever neglects them neglects His remembrance, Mighty and Majestic.
As for the heedless, their forgetfulness of Allah is according to their heedlessness—especially when they are consumed by worldly pursuits, when the world takes hold of their hearts, when they spend most of their time in amusement with it, and when their portion of the religion of Allah the Exalted becomes incomplete obligations, abandoned supererogatory acts, and neglecting the Qur’an. Such people possess abundant forgetfulness and deep heedlessness.
And the punishments for forgetting Allah the Exalted are severe and painful. And they include punishments in both this world and the next.
As for the worldly punishments, they include immediate torment, certain destruction, humiliation after honor, scarcity after abundance, fear after security, and poverty after affluence. As Allah the Exalted says:
Surah Al-An‘am (6) 44: So when they forgot that by which they had been reminded, We opened to them the doors of every good until, when they rejoiced in that which they were given, We seized them suddenly, and they were then in despair.
And He said:
Surah Al-A‘raf (7) 165: So when they forgot that by which they had been reminded, We saved those who forbade wrongdoing and seized those who wronged with a wretched punishment for their defiantly disobedient behavior.
And among the worldly punishments is that Allah the Exalted causes a person to forget themselves, so they do not look after their own benefit, nor distinguish between what harms them from what benefits them. Instead, they work towards destroying themselves while imagining that their condition is improving. This is abandonment by Allah, and it occurs when Allah leaves someone without guidance or success. We seek refuge in Allah the Exalted from such a state.
And among the effects of Allah causing them to forget themselves is that they reach the utmost extremes of wickedness. We seek refuge in Allah the Exalted from that:
Surah Al-Hashr (59) 19: So He made them forget themselves; those are the defiantly disobedient.
As for the punishment in the afterlife for those who forget Allah the Exalted, Allah will forget them, abandon them, and leave them neglected on the Day of Resurrection, and the Fire will be their abode. We seek refuge in Allah the Exalted from that:
Surah Al-A‘raf (7) 5: So today We will forget them just as they forgot the meeting of this Day of theirs and because they used to reject Our signs.
And in another verse:
Surah Ta-Ha (20) 124–126: (124) And We will gather him on the Day of Resurrection blind. (125) He will say, ‘My Lord, why have You raised me blind while I used to see?’ (126) [Allah] will say, ‘Thus did Our signs come to you, and you forgot them; and thus, this Day you will be forgotten.’
And when the polytheists come before their Lord on the Day of Resurrection for reckoning, those whom they worshipped will disown them and declare themselves free of them, and they will make clear that the cause of their polytheism was their turning away from the religion of Allah the Exalted and from what was sent down of the Reminder, this being their forgetting of their own religion:
Surah Al-Furqan (25) 17–18: (17) And [mention] the Day when He will gather them and that which they worship besides Allah and will say, ‘Did you mislead these My servants, or did they [themselves] stray from the way?’ (18) They will say, ‘Exalted are You! It was not for us to take besides You any allies. But You provided comforts for them and their fathers until they forgot the message and became a people ruined.’”
Thus their preoccupation with this worldly life and its pleasures caused them to forget the religion of Allah the Exalted, so they neglected it, abandoned it, and turned away from it. And the consequence of that on the Day of Resurrection is that they became a people ruined. Meaning ruined, devoid of any good and unfit for anything wholesome. Rather, fit only for destruction and loss.
We seek refuge in Allah the Exalted from their condition and their destiny, and we ask Him for uprightness and steadfastness until death.
I say what you have heard and I seek forgiveness from Allah for me and you from every sin. So seek forgives from Him, Verily He is Oft-Forgiving, the Most Merciful.
Second Khutbah
All praise is to Allah, and peace and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, and I bear witness that there is no deity other than Allah and I bear witness that Mohammad is His slave and messenger.
Oh Muslims:
Be conscious of Allah the Exalted and obey Him.
Surah Al-Baqarah (2) 281: And fear a Day when you will be returned to Allah. Then every soul will be compensated for what it earned, and they will not be wronged.
A believer should constantly be self-accounting so that they do not forget anything that Allah the Exalted has commanded them, or fall into anything He has forbidden.
And when they perform an act of obedience, they should regularly perform it and not abandon it. And their today should be better than their yesterday, and their tomorrow better than their today. And as they advance in age, they should increase in righteous deeds. For this is proof of their continual remembrance of Allah the Exalted, of the Hereafter, and that they do not forget.
‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr ibn al-‘As—may Allah be pleased with them both—said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me:
‘O ‘Abdullah, do not be like so-and-so. He used to perform the night prayer, then he abandoned performing the night prayer.’ [Al-Bukhari 1152 and Muslim 1159]
Thus the Prophet ﷺ forbade Abdullah from resembling this man in abandoning an act of obedience that he used to perform. Because that is an aspect of forgetting Allah the Exalted.
So let us be diligent in performing the obligations. And strive in acts of obedience and righteous deeds. And let us turn to the book of Allah. So that we become among those who remember Allah Almighty. And so that we may be among the grateful.
Surah Al-Baqarah (2) 152: So remember Me; I will remember you. And be grateful to Me and do not deny Me.
I conclude with this and send prayers of blessings and peace upon your Prophet as your Lord commanded:
Al Ahzaab (33) 56: Indeed, Allah confers blessing upon the Prophet, and His angels [ask Him to do so]. O you who have believed, ask [ Allah to confer] blessing upon him and ask [ Allah to grant him] peace.
O Allah, guide us with those whom You have guided, grant us well-being among those You have granted well-being, be an ally to us along with those whom You are an ally to, and bless what You have bestowed upon us, and save us from the evil of what You have decreed. For verily You decree and none can decree over You. He whom You support can never be humiliated. Glory is to You, our Lord, You are Blessed and Exalted.
O Allah, We ask You for all that is good, in this world and in the Hereafter, what we know and what we do not know. O Allah, we seek refuge with You from all evil, in this world and in the Hereafter, what we know and what we do not know. O Allah, we ask You for the good that Your servant and Prophet has asked You for, and we seek refuge with You from the evil from which Your servant and Prophet sought refuge. O Allah, we ask You for Paradise and for that which brings one closer to it, in word and deed, and we seek refuge in You from Hell and from that which brings one closer to it, in word and deed. And we ask You to make every decree that You decree concerning us good
Servants of Allah. Indeed, Allah orders justice and good conduct and giving to relatives and forbids immorality and bad conduct and oppression. He admonishes you that perhaps you will be reminded.
Remember Allah, the Great – He will remember you. Thank Him for His favors – He will increase you therein. And seek forgiveness from Him – He will forgive you. And be conscious of Him – He will provide you a way out of difficult matters. And, establish the prayer.
