https://www.khutbah.info/merits-of-abdallah-bin-masood/ Abdallah bin Masood (may Allah be pleased with him) was one of the great companions of the Prophet ﷺ. He is a spectacular role model for us to follow. Abdallah bin Masood has a famous saying that everyone should think about and reflect upon often. Abdallah ibn Masood (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “Whoever follows someone’s way, let him follow the path of a righteous person who has already passed, for the living are not secure from trials. Specifically, the Companions of Muhammad (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him); they were the best of this ummah: the purest of hearts, the deepest in knowledge and the least pretentious. Allah chose them to accompany His Prophet and establish His religion,
Verily, all praise is for Allah. We praise Him, we seek His assistance and we ask for His forgiveness. And we seek refuge in Him from the evils of our selves. Whoever Allah guides, none can misguide. Whoever He misguides, none can guide. And I bear witness that there is no deity other than Allah and I bear witness that Mohammad is His slave and messenger.
Al Imran 102 : O you who believe! Fear Allah as He should be feared, and die not except in a state of Islam.
Oh people:
Abdallah bin Masood (may Allah be pleased with him) was one of the great companions of the Prophet ﷺ.
Allah chose them to accompany His Prophet and establish His religion, so recognize their merits and follow their footsteps and adhere as much as you can to their qualities, manners and ways. For they were on the true guidance.”
Do not be fooled by someone’s righteousness or deeds. For you do not know how their conclusion will be. The alive are not secure from trials and temptations. You do not know what that person will face in their life and whether he will persist in his Iman (faith) or not. For that reason, if one follows someone’s way, they should follow the path of a righteous person who has passed.
The story of Abdallah’s coming to Islam is a fascinating story. Abdallah was grazing some sheep for 3uqbah bin abee Mu3aytt ( عُقْبَة بنِ أبي مُعَيْطٍ ) at the beginning of the Prophet’s ﷺ mission. The Prophet ﷺ and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) approached him and requested some milk. Abdallah declined stating they were not his sheep and that he had been entrusted with them. At that point in his life, Abdallah bin Masood was not yet a Muslim. However, he safeguarded his trusts and had other great virtues that the Arabs were known for even prior to Islam.
Allah knew where to place his message as stated in the Quran:
Al Anam 124 – Allah knows best where to place His message.
Also, the Prophet ﷺ said:
I was sent to perfect good character. [Ahmad 8939 Sahih]
That is, they already had good character such as generosity, honor and loyalty so the Prophet ﷺ was sent to perfect it.
So Ibn Masood said that he was entrusted. He said “I am not able to milk these sheep for you as I have been entrusted.”
The Prophet ﷺ said do you have a young juvenile lamb? Abdallah bin Masood brought a small young lamb and the Prophet ﷺ wiped its udder and supplicated and its udders became filled with milk which is one of the miracles of the Prophet ﷺ. Then Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) brought a hollowed stone to use as a cup. Next, the Prophet ﷺmilked the lamb and drank, then Abu Bakr drank milk followed by Abdallah bin Masood. Then the Prophet ﷺ commanded the udder to shrink and it returned to its previous state.
Afterwards, Abdallah bin Masood went to the Prophet and said: “teach me of what Allah has taught you.” Then the Prophet ﷺ invocated saying “you are a lad that teaches”.
Abdallah bin Masood (may Allah be pleased with him) used to accompany the Prophet often. To the point that when Abu Musa Al Ash3aree came from Yemen with his brother he thought that Abdullah bin Masood and his mother were from the family of the Prophet ﷺ. This was because of how often he saw Abdallah entering and leaving.
Abdallah bin Masood (may Allah be pleased with him) said
I learned 70 seventy surahs straight from the Prophet’s mouth, no one can surpass me in them
Abdallah Bin Masood (may Allah be pleased with him) said:
By Him besides Whom there is no god, there is no surah in the Book of Allah except that I know the place that it was revealed. And there is no verse that I do not know in what context it was revealed. And if I knew that there is somebody who knows Allah’s Book better than I, and he is at a place that camels can reach, I would go to him. [Al Bukhari 5002 Muslim 2463]
In addition to his knowledge, Abdallah bin Masood was among the most cautious companions to follow the guidance and way of the Prophet ﷺ.
Huthaifah bin Yamaan said the closest companion in guidance and following the Prophet ﷺ is Abdullah bin Masood.
Also, Abdallah bin Masood (may Allah be pleased with him) had a beautiful recitation of the Quran. If Abdullah bin Masood recited, the listener would want him to keep on reciting and not stop.
One day, the Prophet ﷺ entered the masjed with Omar (may Allah be pleased with him) and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and he saw Abdallah bin Masood praying and reciting from surah An-Nisa. He stopped reciting once he reached the ayat 100 and then Abdallah started supplicating. The Prophet ﷺ said “ask you will be given, ask you will be given”. Then the next day Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) wanted to give the glad tidings to Abdallah bin Masood and asked him about his supplication. Abdullah bin Masood said: I supplicated:
Oh Allah I ask you for unwavering Iman (faith) and endless bliss and the company of Mohammad in the highest eternal paradise.
Omar (May Allah be pleased with Him) said “I went to give him glad tidings and found that Abu Bakr had beaten me to it.”
On another occasion, Abdallah bin Masood (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet ﷺ said to me: “Recite the Quran to me”. I said, “O Messenger of Allah! Shall I recite the Qur’an to you, when it has been revealed to you?” He ﷺ replied, “I love to hear it recited by others”. So I recited to him a portion from Surat An-Nisa’. When I reached the Ayah:
“How (will it be) then, when We bring from each nation a witness and We bring you (O Muhammad ﷺ ) as a witness against these people?”. (4:41)
He ﷺ said, “Enough for now”. When I looked at him I saw his eyes were shedding tears. [Al- Bukhari and Muslim].
Abdallah bin Masood (may Allah be pleased with him) had many wise sayings for us to ponder about and reflect on. And from among them is:Your terms are drawing closer and your deeds are preserved. And death comes suddenly. So whoever sows good will harvest what he seeks. And whomsoever plants evil will harvest sorrow. And everyone will harvest what they sow. A person cannot outpace their decree. And a keen person will only get what they were decreed. So whoever is given good should know that Allah gave him. And whoever was shielded from evil should know that Allah protected him.
I say what you have heard and I seek forgiveness from Allah for me and you from every sin. So seek forgives from Him, Verily He is Oft-Forgiving, the Most Merciful.
Second Khutbah
All praise is to Allah, and peace and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, and I bear witness that there is no deity other than Allah and I bear witness that Mohammad is His slave and messenger.
Oh Muslims:
Omar (May Allah be pleased with him) loved Abdallah bin Masood. During his caliphate he sent Abdallah bin Masood to the people of Iraq saying I have sent you Abdallah bin Masood as a teacher and an ambassador and I have preferred you over myself by sending him to you.
When Amr bin Al 3aas (may Allah be pleased with him) was on his deathbed and was in severe pain his son Abdallah comforted him asking “did not the Prophet bring you close to him and entrust you to lead.” He said “By Allah I do not know if he did so out of love for me or to soften my heart but what I do know is that he died loving Abdallah bin Masood (may Allah be pleased with him).
The beloved Abdallah bin Masood (may Allah be pleased with him) died in 32 or 33 hijri during the caliphate of Uthman (May Allah be pleased with him). May Allah fill our hearts with love for Abdallah bin Masood and all of the companions. For loving the companions is from the Iman (faith). And in the afterlife a person will be with the one whom he loves as Anas narrated:
A man asked the Prophet ﷺ about the Hour (i.e. Day of Judgment) saying, “When will the Hour be?” The Prophet ﷺ said, “What have you prepared for it?” The man said, “Nothing, except that I love Allah and His Apostle.” The Prophet ﷺ said, “You will be with those whom you love.” We had never been so glad as we were on hearing that saying of the Prophet (“You will be with those whom you love.”) Therefore, I love the Prophet, Abu Bakr and `Umar, and I hope that I will be with them because of my love for them though my deeds are not similar to theirs.
The first step towards loving the companions is to learn about their lives and noble character. To learn about how they lived, their stands, their actions, their sacrifice and their deeds. So that we can emulate them, follow them and imitate them in all aspects of our lives. For if one cannot be like the companions then one should imitate them. For imitating the noble is in itself success.
We ask Allah to grant us the love of the companions of the Prophet ﷺand to make us among those who emulate them and follow their path in all situations, in all of our actions and at all times.
I conclude with this and send prayers of blessings and peace upon your Prophet as your Lord commanded:
Al Ahzaab (33) 56: Indeed, Allah confers blessing upon the Prophet, and His angels [ask Him to do so]. O you who have believed, ask [ Allah to confer] blessing upon him and ask [ Allah to grant him] peace.
O Allah, guide us with those whom You have guided , grant us well-being among those You have granted well-being, be an ally to us along with those whom You are an ally to, and bless what You have bestowed upon us, and save us from the evil of what You have decreed. For verily You decree and none can decree over You. He whom You support can never be humiliated. Glory is to You, our Lord, You are Blessed and Exalted.
O Allah, We ask You for all that is good, in this world and in the Hereafter, what we know and what we do not know. O Allah, we seek refuge with You from all evil, in this world and in the Hereafter, what we know and what we do not know. O Allah, we ask You for the good that Your servant and Prophet has asked You for, and we seek refuge with You from the evil from which Your servant and Prophet sought refuge. O Allah, we ask You for Paradise and for that which brings one closer to it, in word and deed, and we seek refuge in You from Hell and from that which brings one closer to it, in word and deed. And we ask You to make every decree that You decree concerning us good
Servants of Allah. Indeed, Allah orders justice and good conduct and giving to relatives and forbids immorality and bad conduct and oppression. He admonishes you that perhaps you will be reminded.
Remember Allah, the Great – He will remember you. Thank Him for His favors – He will increase you therein. And seek forgiveness from Him – He will forgive you. And be conscious of Him – He will provide you a way out of difficult matters. And, establish the prayer.
